The author of this project has actively sought participation in the Carey/Cary/Carrie family DNA project. To date, we have three matching DNA samples that represent three different branches of the family at about 1800. The Y-tests were composed of 37 or more markers and provide irrefutable proof that the lineage described in the project is correct. Of these, two tests came from descendants of Samuel Cary, one from a descendant of John Read Cary of Gloucester County, Virginia and the other from a descendant of Samuel Joseph Cary of Nottoway County, Virginia. The third test came from a descendant of Edward Cary through his son Francis Stubbs Cary. There were two additional branches indicated who were descendants of Edward Cary and Martha Stubbs: Edward M. Cary of Marion County, Missouri and Charles Mynn Cary of Union County, Kentucky. Of these, there are no known males bearing the Cary name in the branch of Edward M. Cary. The branch of Charles Mynn Cary has only recently been identified and is believed to be associated with the project as descendants of Edward Cary and Martha Stubbs. The author awaits the occasion when a DNA sample from this branch will be submitted in order to obtain definitive proof.
News! A DNA sample for a descendant of Charles M. Cary of Kentucky has been evaluated for 37 markers and matches 37 out of 37. We now have DNA proof that Charles M. Cary of Kentucky was the son of Edward Cary and Martha Stubbs.
At this point the basis for associating the descendants of Charles M. Cary of Union County, Kentucky is circumstantial, based on close associations between relatives of Ann T. Finnie, the wife of Charles M. Cary, whose mother was Rachel Berry Taylor of Orange County, Virginia. Rachel Berry Taylor's cousin, Edmund Gibson Taylor, married Sarah Stubbs, the sister of Martha Stubbs who married Edward Cary, the father of Charles Mynn Cary. A son of of Edmund Gibson Taylor also married a daughter of Rev. Charles Mynn Thruston, a figure prominently associated with the family of Edward Cary of Frederick County, Virginia. It is believed that Charles Mynn Cary migrated to Kentucky perhaps in the entourage of Rev. Charles Mynn Thruston. Furthermore, the age and time of arrival in Kentucky of Charles M. Cary of Union County, Kentucky coincide with what one would expect from what is known of the family in Virginia. The DNA test is needed to prove this connection since court records and other documents that would prove it are lacking. To review the connections between the Cary, Thruston, Stubbs and Taylor families, see the
Descendant outline of James Carey, the grandfather of John Cary who married Mary Reade. Note that John Thruston (son of John Thruston and Sarah Mynne) was the guardian for Samuel and Edward Cary, the orphans of John Cary.
Perhaps the most exciting revelation from the DNA tests is positive proof that John Cary of York County, Virginia was not a descendant of Miles Cary of Warwick County, Virginia. It has been believed by many Cary descendants that John Cary was a descendant of Miles Cary, although the author and others with whom he has collaborated have felt confident that this assertion was incorrect. The parents of John Cary were likely Edward Cary and Mary ----, who baptized several children whose names match known members of this family, recorded in the Abingdon Parish Register in Gloucester County, Virginia. It is believed that the parents of this Edward Cary were likely James Carey and Sarah, who similarly baptized several children, beginning in 1689, recorded in the Abingdon Parish Register. It is thought that the father of this James Carey may have been Edward Cary, known to have arrived in Gloucester County as a headright for Augustine Warner. The identity of ancestors prior to this family is not possible to determine due to destruction of court records in Gloucester County, Virginia. However, it is hoped that the Carey/Cary/Carrie DNA project will shed light on the origins of the family in the future.
